Have you ever tried to write a song? If you haven’t yet, give it a try. There’s something very therapeutic about expressing yourself with not only words but music as well. Music can add a whole new meaning to words, meaning that you didn’t even realise was there.
Start with a tune in your head and begin to express it with words. Or start with some words and attempt to hum a tune in time. Can you feel the words lifting? Can you feel the emotion? Are your words transforming into something different to how you saw them in the first place? How are you feeling?
Sometimes we need new ways to express ourselves, in order to reconnect with feelings we may have buried because we’re too busy to deal with them. Writing our own song can be a powerful way of doing this. We all know the emotion we can feel when listening to other people’s songs, how about we own that emotion? We can own it as we’re the one creating it. With our own story, with our own tune, our own rhythm.
Next time you have a challenging day find that songwriter within, write your own song then dance to it like no one’s watching.
And if anyone is, simply take their hand and ask them to join in. Who could say no to that?
